About Lucy Ghelfi

Lucy has always been an artist, daydreaming about the colors and textures that surrounded her in the fields she worked as a child. She came to know nature at an elemental level, being able to sense changes in the mist from early-morning to mid-morning, or the different hues the ocean took as the day wore on.

She was born smack dab in the middle... The middle of 6 children; the middle of California; the middle of the twentieth century. She would become a part of the abstract expressionist movement that was taking shape at the same time these rows of crops imprinted their shapes onto her first memories.

Es más que parece… Lucy Ghelfi embraces a desire to welcome the unexpected into her artwork and reveals that she is a nonconformist at heart. Within a culture, there are unique differences in every experience. Lucy’s identity as a Mexican-American woman has also imbued in her a core value of inclusivity across divisions. The ways in which heritage creates inter-connections, even to those who did not walk the same path, is what interests and excites her.

She was a migrant worker, moving from place to place with her family, until middle school, when Salinas became home. She would eventually obtain a masters degree, but remembers every name of every art teacher throughout junior high and high school. And after years working as an educator herself, Lucy’s training in Studio Arts began in earnest at San Jose City College and West Valley Community College. She has been hard at work as an artist ever since.

Her work has debuted in dozens of shows across the San Francisco Bay Area, including solo exhibitions. Her artwork crosses many mediums, from ceramics to mixed media, with the incorporation of found objects. Her materials are often unconventional, from powdered pigments to acrylics, from fabric to spackle. Her artwork can be found in collections up and down the Pacific Coast and throughout the country.

Artist Statement

Art heals the soul! The creation and ownership of art, has the capabilities to profoundly affect the soul. A brush stroke, the chiseling of fresh cut oak, a pouring of molten alloy into a cast which reveals the efforts of a hand carved sculpture; these are all techniques and outcomes that can carry you to another land filled with joy.

Lucy Ghelfi offers her clients one of a kind, abstract paintings, on panel or stretched canvas. Each piece can be hung vertically, diagonally, or horizontally. While some bodies of work require acrylic and powdered pigment paints, others beckon paper, fabric, and varying objects. All of her magnificent works require special attention and hand selected materials. Ghelfi’s latest body of work utilizes oil and acrylic paints, combined with a wax medium, taking this collection to the next level. Each abstract painting is offered on panel, or canvas.
